A Tragic Reminder of Road Safety and Responsibility
In the early hours of October 25, tragedy struck Bagatelle Road in Melville when 28-year-old Joseph Melendez of Wyandanch was fatally hit while riding his Razor Fly Wing e-bike. Suffolk County Police say the crash occurred at 1:06 a.m. when Jennifer Kirkpatrick, 24, attempted a left turn in her Subaru Forester and collided with Melendez.
Kirkpatrick was arrested at the scene and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. Melendez was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.
This incident is part of a troubling rise in e-bike fatalities across Long Island and the nation. It’s a stark reminder that road safety isn’t just about rules—it’s about lives.
